Sonia Maxwell, PsyD, LMFT
LMFTTherapist Details
Depending on your needs, I offer short-term counseling that defines specific goals and develops practical solutions, or in-depth work that explores persistent negative patterns and how to overcome them. I work with adults, teens, and couples on a wide range of issues, including unipolar depression, anxiety, trauma, codependency, pattern of painful relationships, poor self-esteem, life transitions, identity development, divorce and coparenting, and multicultural couples/families. Specific to LGBTQ concerns, I have clinical experience with topics such as coming out to family and friends, questioning one’s sexual identity, struggling with religious beliefs and one’s sexual orientation, and dealing with interpersonal and/or institutional stigmatization. In addition, I conducted doctoral research on parenthood in same-sex couples and the protective factors which can maximize their children’s positive psychosocial outcomes. My integrative approach includes theories such as the minority stress model, social cognitive, solution-focused, systems, cognitive-behavioral, and emotionally focused therapy. I also offer EMDR treatment. Please visit my website for a more detailed discussion of different modalities and topics.
